FIXING AND SAVING OLD PHOTOS
Fixing old pictures with http://pixlr.com/ using the Pixlr Express feature. He suggested to scan your pictures for archiving, using 600 dpi and archive (save as) in a TIFF format rather than JPG. While the TIFF format is much larger, it will not degrade quality as a JPG will.
If you archive many photos, you will probably need a portable (external) hard drive. A thumb drive may work well. It is recommended that you always make 2 backups on separate media for safety
Another free site that was suggested to edit your photos: http://getgimp.com/lp/index.php?pk=6542 or www.picasa.com from Google
